Minecraft Update Aquatic- Coral Texture Changes

Here is our first image of official coral from Minecon 2017!

The Update Aquatic has a lot of great features including dolphins, shipwrecks and the trident. These were all previewed at Minecon. One feature which has been brought to the public via a snapshot is the coral blocks, also showcased at Minecon. But it looks like some people don't like the new textures and we got some reasons why by a developer.

How have the Coral blocks changed from Minecon?

The changed quite significantly actually. From the image above (left being Minecon coral and right being snapshot coral), the coral from Minecon has more of a contrast between the light and dark variants of each colour. Whereas for the snapshot colours, it seems to be the same colours but not really much different in the textures in the snapshot block.

Could change to the texture be made?

Absolutely! Johan Aronson (who is the lead pixel artist at Mojang) is looking into the textures for the blocks and seeing how they can change them. These new textures will more than likely make it into a future snapshot. Johan also confirmed in this tweet that it is "a little weirder" that is hasn't come with a structure.

Are the textures shown at Minecon more colourful than the snapshot ones? Why are they so different anyway?

Actually, the minecon colours are LESS colourful! It looks like they increased the colour palette of the coral blocks but decreased the contrast. They are so different because at minecon they were shown as a structure of blocks whereas in the snapshot we got the blocks only for creative use. Once we get coral blocks spawning naturally, it will give us an idea of what they are like.

Will we get them in 16 colours?

It doesn't look like it. Johan stated that he doesn't believe that the 16 colours are the way to go for the coral but he likes the colour pink.
